Fitness First was founded in 1993 by the renowned businessman Mike Balfour. Mike Balfour has a passion for health, fitness, business, and has served as a director at a Texas health club operator. The Houstonian Club operator has since bought an "old squash club" and has turned it into the world's largest gym chain, Fitness First.

Fitness First has had humble beginnings at an old squash club in Bournemouth, United Kingdom. Today, it has over 377 fitness clubs worldwide. It has an approximate amount of 900.000 members in 16 different countries including Fitness First UAE, with locations in Fitness First Dubai (Fitness First Burjuman and Fitness Mirdif) and Fitness First Abu Dhabi.

There are 60 Fitness First gyms in Australia, with combined 240,000 members who visit the fitness center over 15 million times a year.
