If you are pregnant, you might wonder whether you can exercise, and if so, how to do it safely. The good news is that you can, and we have five rules that will help you stay safe, while enjoying effective, healthy exercises.

There are many myths surrounding exercising when pregnant. Not only is it possible, but there are quite a lot of exercises you can do safely and effectively. Exercising is also good for you while pregnant, as it improves your mood, keeps you healthy and even prevent gestational diabetes. It can also help you prepare for labour and keep you strong and healthy.

  1. Check with Your Doctor

Now that you know exercising when pregnant can be beneficial, it’s still a good idea to check with your doctor before you start any program. You need to check that you don’t have any possible complications, that you are healthy, and fit enough to exercise. Once you are cleared, you can choose a workout program that suits your lifestyle and fitness goals.

  1. Eat Enough Calories

This is important; you need to eat enough healthy calories to not only support your growing baby, but also your exercise routine. You should not aim for weight loss when your pregnant, but rather to maintain a healthy and fit lifestyle. Try to keep your BMI (body mass index) between 18 and 25, to ensure you are healthy.

  1. Avoid Dangerous Activities

Never take part in any contact sports and avoid activities that can easily cause you to be thrown off balance. Examples are horse riding and skiing. You don’t want to take any unnecessary risks, so stick to training inside a gym, and possibly with an experienced trainer. You want to avoid injury as much as possible, and with that said, make sure that you always warm up properly before an exercise session to avoid injuries.

  1. Always wear comfortable clothing

You should feel comfortable, and avoid any tight-fitting clothes that can restrict your movements, or blood flow in general. You can also wear a maternity bra for additional support when training. Comfortable clothing will also make you enjoy your workout sessions more.

  1. Drink enough water

Another important aspect is to take in enough fluids, including water. You should always be well-hydrated, and even more so when you are pregnant. Make sure that you take your water bottle with you at all times, and take regular sips throughout your workout sessions.
